Olives to Oil is an annual celebration that brings communities together in the name of sustainable olive oil. People come together to harvest unwanted olives from Melbourne backyards and street trees to be pressed into local olive oil to take home for free.
This year thanks to the support of the Rotary Club of Balwyn and City of Boroondara, Olives to Oil harvesting parties will be hosted in:
You don’t need to own an olive tree or live in Boroondara to get involved – read on!
Already convinced? Send me updates.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
On the 25th and 26th May, harvesters will collect up all of the olives they can and bring them to pre-arranged olive drop off points. 3000acres will take the olives to be pressed.
The following weekend, we’ll meet again for you to collect your delicious, local olive oil to take home and enjoy!
DO YOU KNOW OF ANY OLIVE TREES IN BOROONDARA?
Boroondara includes the suburbs of Ashburton, Balwyn, Balwyn North, Camberwell, Canterbury, Glen Iris, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Kew East, Mont Albert and Surrey Hills. If you know of an olive tree on the street, in a backyard or in a public place such as a community garden – we want to know about it! Fill out this form, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
DO YOU WANT TO BE AN OLIVE HARVESTER?
Regardless of where you live, you can be an olive harvester. Read all the details on how here: Olives to Oil How-to General (1).
WHY WOULD I PARTICIPATE?
Free local olive oil, saving unwanted olives from turning into waste and contributing to the urban agriculture movement – why would you not?! Oh, and of course harvesting parties are heaps of fun!
HOW DO I HARVEST OLIVES?
Don’t worry – we don’t expect you to be an olive tree expert! At the harvesting events we’ll give you all the tips and tricks, and send you out in a harvesting squad so you’ll have lots of support.
If you want to harvest on your own time, check out our info sheet here: Olives to Oil How-to General (1).
CAN I HARVEST OLIVES OUTSIDE OF BOROONDARA?
We’d love if you bring olives along from outside of Boroondara on the weekend, but they MUST have been harvested that weekend. Olives can spoil which would taint our beautiful olive oil. Make sure you give us your email so we can let you know where to deliver your olives.
IS IT FREE?
Participation is free and the olive oil is free! Once the olives have been pressed, we’ll divide up the delicious olive oil amongst all the participants – volunteer pickers and owners of volunteer trees.
WHY IS THIS IN BOROONDARA?
This program is supported by the Rotary Club of Balwyn and City of Boroondara. There are heaps of olive trees in the area to be harvested and we want to get all sorts of local people and groups involved.
